TRAINEE LICENCE - OPTIONAL

Once you've completed your 40 hours training you have two options. With further practice proceed straight to your Part 3 Instructors exam or gain further experience on a Trainee Licence. The Trainee Licence allows you to earn while gaining experience with pupils. (Cost for 6 months £140). With either option you need to put into practice and develop your new skills learned during training.

Once your family and friends know you are learning to become an instructor you no doubt will have a stream of willing volunteers for you to practice on! (Remember, if you are not on a trainee licence you are NOT to take money for lessons). Some trainees offer free lessons while they are training and subsidised rates when they pass. You will need to be covered by the correct insurance. Network with local instructors and ask if they'd mind you sitting in on some of their lessons (with the pupils consent of course). There are a lot of good books out on the market as well as visual and training aids. Link up with a 'Training Buddy', this is basically someone else in your area who is also training. You can role play together and practice briefs as well as go over subject matter. Whichever works best for you, I'd recommend all of the above.

How to apply for a Trainee Licence
Once you have completed Form ADI 21T, send it to the DSA with the fee and two recent passport style photos, a cheque for £140 along with a signed declaration that you've completed your 40 hours training. You will then be sent a Pink Licence to display in your windscreen.

Whilst on the Trainee Licence you are expected to continue training. Your sponsor can either supervise you or help you with additional training. Or you can continue your 20 hours with your original trainer.

Supervision:
Your sponsoring ADI/School must record 20% of all the lessons you give on Supervision Record ADI 21S which will be issued with the licence and signed by both the ADI and Trainee and returned to the DSA when the licence expires.

or

Additional Training:
A minimum of 20 hours additional training must be undertaken (at least 25% must be practical in-car training, with no more than two trainees to a car to one ADI). This training must take place within the first 3 months on the licence, or before your first attempt at Part 3, whichever is soonest. A record of this extra training must be kept by your trainer on the Instructor Training Declaration Form (ADI 21AT) which will be issued with the licence. The completed form must be sent to the DSA before the end of the three month period, or presented to the examiner conducting your Part 3 test, whichever is sooner.

On either option, if you fail your first or second attempt at Part 3 you must provide evidence that you have taken five hours additional training at the time of your next test, otherwise your trainee licence may be revoked.

Remember, under the Trainee Licence you must NOT advertise yourself as if you were a fully qualified instructor.
