To begin training as an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), you must have held a full, clean driving licence for 4 years. If you have points on your licence you are still able to apply and the DSA will assess your application.
You will also need to have a CRB check (Criminal Record check from the Criminal Records Bureau) before you apply to the DSA to make sure you don't have any criminal records or convictions. This can take up to 6-8 weeks. Once you have received your clean certificate you can then apply to the DSA to join as a Driving Instructor.
Part 1 - Theory Test
You will be tested on 100 multiple choice questions on the Highway Code and general road practices as well as the Hazard Perception test, 14 computerised driving clips where you have to click the screen when you see potential and developing hazards.
Part 2 - Advanced Driving Test
An hour long driving test to assess that your driving is to an advanced standard and that you handle yourself with confidence and are able to make quick, efficient decisions.
Part 3 - Instructor Ability Test
An hour long test split into two parts. The first half is to test your ability to instruct a Phase 1 Pupil (beginner or partly trained), the second half to assess that you can adapt your teaching when instructing a Phase 2 Pupil (Trained - near test standard, or full licence holder needing further help).
You may take the theory test as many times as you need, however the Part 2 and Part 3 exams have a maximum of three attempts. If you were to fail either section on the 3rd attempt you would need to wait two years from the date you passed your theory test to begin again. This would mean starting from the beginning. So it's important to feel ready when taking either exam so that you don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself.
Once you've completed your 40 hours Part 3 training and gained enough practice and experience along side your training you can proceed to your Driving Instructor's exam, Or you may decide to work while you train on the 'Trainee Licence'. The Licence currently costs £140. For more information see the 'Trainee Licence' tab.
